I'm often asked how I come up with titles for my crime novels and the
answer is sometimes with great difficulty. However some titles can come
instantly, almost the moment the novel hits the page although that is
rare. Dead Man's Wharf was one such case.

The location and scene of the murder in the novel though can also prompt the title as in A Killing Coast, when a body is found floating in the sea off Portsmouth harbour but the
action also takes place around the stunning coastal bays of the Isle of
Wight.

There there is Death Lies Beneath, the eighth in the Horton series, when a woman's body is found on a sunken barge just off a disused quayside in Portsmouth.

The main character's actions can also prompt a title as in my thriller novel, In For The Kill

My mini tour of the North East of England was delightful and rewarding.
Authors spend so much time working alone with only their characters for
company that it is always good to get out and meet readers and that is
just what I was doing in Hartlepool and Whitley Bay last week, and in
Gateshead when I took part in the first ever CSI Gateshead, modelled on
the event I help to organise in Portsmouth every year, CSI Portsmouth.

In this blog entry I talk about my visit to Throston Grange Library, Hartlepool and to Whitley Bay Library with photographs from both events.

Nearly a hundred and twenty people attended the first ever CSI Gateshead
event at Gateshead Library on Thursday 25 April. Inspired by the CSI Portsmouth event, which crime author, Pauline Rowson helps to organise. The CSI Gateshead event was a huge success.

Pauline Rowson says, 'CSI Gateshead was modelled on the CSI Portsmouth
event with some slight variation. The Gateshead event took place over
two hours on an evening with one panel of crime fiction authors and
crime experts whereas CSI Portsmouth is a full day event with two panels
of crime authors and crime experts. Both events are proving to be
extremely popular with crime fiction fans and those who enjoy CSI
programmes on the television.'

This is an article which originally appeared in The News (Portsmouth) written by crime author Pauline Rowson about the importance of libraries.

"I owe a great deal to libraries and particularly the libraries of
Portsmouth. Without them I might never have discovered the sheer joy of
reading and ultimately have become a crime writer.

Coming from a household where money was tight I was fortunate enough to
be introduced by a friend’s mother to a small local library in
Portsmouth, the Alderman Lacey Library in Tangiers Road. There I
discovered a treasure trove of books, the sheer volume and variety of
which would have been impossible for my parents to buy, let alone
store. I devoured everything from adventure to classics and many in
between...

I was trying to recall how many times I have visited the London Book
Fair and have to admit that I can't. I do however remember that the
first time I visited the London Book Fair was in 1998. It's hard for me
to believe it was that long ago. My first impressions were that it
was like no other exhibition I had ever attended and that impression
remains, although I have witnessed the changes over the years.
