The recipe for a perfect crime series- a rugged hero and an ever changing sea

A flawed and rugged hero cop, a strong cast of diverse characters, set them against the ever changing sea of the Solent on the South Coast of England, mix with mystery and toss in a dead body or two and you have the the perfect recipe for an entertaining crime series - the DI Andy Horton marine mystery crime novels.

Women readers often tell me they are in love with DI Andy Horton (join the queue) and men like him because he's an action guy - he's fit, fearless and forty. Rugged and flawed Andy Horton is a maverick cop who is tough on villains and prepared to take risks in his search for justice. He's been raised in children's homes after his mother abandoned him as a child. He has a desperate need to belong and yet is always on the outside. Being alone is his greatest fear, yet he is alone.

The novels are set against the atmospheric backdrop of the sea in the Solent area on the South Coast of England. Estranged from his wife, who does her best to prevent him from seeing his eight year old daughter, Emma, Andy Horton lives alone on his yacht in Southsea Marina and rides a Harley Davidson.

Entertaining the ladies of Southampton Tangent Club with tales of crime

I was delighted to be the lunchtime guest speaker at the Southampton branch of the National Association of Tangent on a cold Tuesday on the 20 January.  The lunch was held in the Keats Restaurant, Ampfield, near Romsey in Hampshire and a very good lunch it was too with great company.

Pauline Rowson talking about her crime novels to members of Southampton Tangent ClubAfter the two course lunch I entertained the audience with tales of my crime heroes and especially the exploits of my rugged and flawed detective DI Andy Horton.  This was followed by questions and a book signing.

Unveiling the fabulous new cover of the NEW Art Marvik Marine Thriller

Well here it is - the fabulous cover of my new crime novel, the first in the explosive new marine crime series featuring Art Marvik, Silent Running, which will be published by Severn House in March 2015.

Silent Running introduces former Royal Marine Commando, Special Boat Services Officer, Art Marvik.  Adrift after leaving the marines, Marvik unexpectedly finds himself being used as bait to catch a ruthless killer whose slaying spree spans the decades. In a race against time, Marvik is sucked into a dangerous assignment and a web of deceit that will need all his skills, and those of his friend, former Marine Special Forces Communicator, Shaun Strathen, to get to the truth. Their mission, to stop a ruthless killer before he kills again.

Book reviews

I've been fortunate enough to have some great reviews from websites and reviewers in the UK, USA and Commonwealth for my crime novels and it's always rewarding when a reader takes the time to tell me how much they have enjoyed reading my crime novels. One such reader recently put on Facebook that her New Year resolution was to read again the complete DI Andy Horton series from beginning to the latest one. Now that's nice.

Recommendation and leaving a review on one of the book websites such as Amazon, or sharing it on social media via Facebook, Twitter for example is a great way to spread the news about a good book so if you've enjoyed reading any of my crime novels I'd be delighted if you could take the time to leave a review.

And for those of you who have already done so, many thanks.

Locations for the DI Andy Horton Crime Series

The Marine Mystery DI Andy Horton series of police procedural crime novels are set in the Solent area on the South Coast of England, and more specifically, Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight and surrounding areas of Hayling, Fareham and Gosport. Essentially they are set around the sea - hence Marine Mysteries - my trademark, and because I live in the area I'm often out looking for a good place to put a body - or rather perhaps I should say I'm out on location research and gaining inspiration.

These photographs were taken recently on a trip between Portsmouth and Gosport, which means a short ferry journey across the very busy and narrow entrance of Portsmouth Harbour, where my rugged and flawed detective, DI Andy Horton, often travels sometimes with the marine police unit  of Sergeant Elkins and Constable Ripley, in the pursuit of an investigation.
