Pauline Rowson entertains a packed audience at Totton South U3A

A packed audience at Totton South U3A listening to Pauline Rowson talking about her crime novelsAlmost a hundred people packed Colbury Memorial Hall  on the edge of the New Forest, Hampshire on a very hot summer's day in June to listen to me talking about how I research, plot and write my crime novels. I talked about the DI Andy Horton series set in the Solent area on the South Coast of England. The DI Andy Horton crime novels have recently been optioned for TV by one of the UK's top television production companies, Lime Pictures, who are seeking to bring the flawed and rugged, sailing  detective, Andy Horton to the TV screens.

I also spoke about my new hero, former marine commando, Art Marvik, in Silent Running, and my stand alone thrillers, In Cold Daylight and In For The Kill.

Pauline Rowson on what makes a crime fiction writer

It’s often said that you should write about what you know, but I don't agree. I’ve never committed a murder, or been a police officer, and neither am I married to one. I’ve had no previous experience or knowledge of the law, except what I’ve read in crime novels, and I’ve never been to an autopsy, yet after many trials and tribulations I finally got the job as a crime writer. It’s my belief then that you should write what you are enthusiastic about, but you also need some additional qualities.

Persistence and patience are essential in order to be able to ferret out the information you require. This can be desk research via the Internet, the library and/or by speaking to individuals.

Announcing the book cover for the NEW DI Andy Horton - Fatal Catch

I'm delighted to showcase the cover for the NEW DI Andy Horton crime novel, number 12 in the series to feature the flawed and rugged sailing detective, Fatal CatchFatal Catch will be published in September in the UK in hardcover by Severn House Publishers.  It will be published in the USA in January.

Trust no one, believe nothing….

Detective Inspector Andy Horton is called out to examine a gruesome catch by two fishermen: a human hand. Is it that of missing violent criminal Alfie Wright – or is he the killer? And where is the rest of the corpse?   Soon Horton finds himself immersed in a complex case where everyone has a reason to lie and no one is who they seem. Assailed by doubts both in his personal and professional life, Horton desperately tries to keep his emotional feelings under control and his focus on his work. His instincts tell him to trust no one and believe nothing; he’s not sure though whether this time he’ll succeed …

Why the Solent is the ideal setting for a crime novel and home to DI Andy Horton

A question I am often asked is why I set my DI Andy Horton police procedural detective novels in the Solent area and one of the reasons, among many, was reinforced recently as I was crossing it from the Isle of Wight to Portsmouth on the Wightlink ferry.

Here's why... read on...

The DI Andy Horton crime novels in order

Do I have to read the DI Andy Horton series in order?

The answer is no. They can all be read in any order because it can never be determined which book a reader might buy online or from a bookshop or borrow from a library first. Some readers have told me that they've discovered Andy Horton in a later book in the series and then having done so have gone back to the beginning and read them in sequence.

There are now now eleven in the DI Andy Horton series with Shroud of Evil the latest to be published and number twelve, Fatal Catch, being published in the UK in September 2015 and in the USA in January 2016.

Death Surge, is now published in paperback and as an ebook and is also available in hardcover. as are the others. Many are also available as audio books and in large print.  So DI Horton has come a long way since first appearing in Tide of Death in 2006.

In each DI Andy Horton there is an element of the main character’s personal life to follow,  but each novel contains a new murder mystery to be solved.

What's on in June 2015

June 2015 is relatively quiet in terms of talks and appearances but I am looking forward to entertaining the audience of Totton South U3A on 19 June.

Aside from that I will as ever be busy writing throughout June.  I have just finished fifth revisions to DI Andy Horton number 13 in the series and will now be setting that aside for a while as I put the finishing touches to the second in the Art Marvik crime series.
