Popular crime author to talk to Read For Life Portsmouth Volunteers

Pauline RowsonPauline Rowson, author of the DI Andy Horton marine mystery crime novels set in the Solent area, is to give a talk to the Read for Life volunteers in Portsmouth on Tuesday 26 March.

Read For Life is a community interest company that trains and supports volunteers to help primary school children with their reading, not only in Portsmouth but also in the surrounding southeast Hampshire boroughs.

Read For Life recruits volunteers by personal interview and trains them to help children to read. Volunteers are placed in primary schools to work one to one with three children for half an hour per child, twice a week. It provides a box of books, games and puzzle sheets for use in schools and gives on-going advice and support to volunteers. Results show that a hundred percent of children helped in this way show an improvement in reading and ninety four percent an improvement in self-confidence.  Schools are asked to contribute towards the cost of providing the service.

Pauline Rowson says, ‘Reading not only helps boost self confidence and self esteem it also leads to much better job prospects.  Reading can also give children and adults countless hours of pleasure. I’m very much looking forward to talking to the Read For Life volunteers.’
