Detective Inspector Andy Horton spots a police car outside Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. He’s supposed to be on holiday, but his curiosity gets the better of him and he stops to investigate.

Lying face down and sprawled out in Number One Dock is the lifeless body of naval historian Dr Douglas Spalding.

Superintendent Uckfield is adamant that Spalding took his own life. But Horton’s not so sure. Then another body is found in similar circumstances in the cockpit of a boat moored at Oyster Quays.

Angry at his boss’s inaction, Horton takes matters into his own hands.

THE DETECTIVES

Inspector Andy Horton is a flawed and rugged cop, instinctive, tough and resilient, but deeply empathetic. A man very much defined by a tormented past, but with hopes for his future. Living on board his small yacht in Southsea Marina since his estrangement from his wife, the sailing detective is a man rarely at peace, unless he is on the sea. He rides a Harley-Davidson and never wears a suit or tie — unless it’s to go to court. When fighting crime he is prepared to take risks and is fearless in his search for justice. He's been raised in children's homes and foster homes after his mother abandoned him as a child. He has a desperate need to belong and yet is always on the outside. Being alone is his greatest fear, yet he is alone.

DS Barney Cantelli is happily married to Charlotte with five children. Cantelli followed in his maternal grandfather’s footsteps and became a policeman. His brothers and sister took over their father’s ice cream business and cafés in Portsmouth. Cantelli and Horton work well together and Cantelli is, or tries to be, Horton’s steadying influence. Only Cantelli and SP Steve Uckfield know about Horton’s past. But not everything; no one knows that.

 THE SETTING

Portsmouth boasts a vibrant waterfront, a diverse multicultural population, an international port, a historic dockyard, and is home of the Royal Navy. Portsmouth Harbour is one of the busiest in the world — and one of the best places to hide a body, it seems. Set against the backdrop of the sea, the Solent area of Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight is every detective’s worst nightmare. The sea is ever-changing and often the best clues get swept away by the tide.

Compelling, multi-layered, gripping, a great read for mystery lovers.

"Rowson successfully pilots the complex storyline, filled with wild speculations and a slew of suspects, to a fitting conclusion." Publishers Weekly

"Another solid procedural from Rowson, with a little kick of spy stuff for the adventurous." Kirkus.

"As usual, Rowson offers up a thorny, multifaceted plot; a profusion of unusual twists; a likable yet complex hero; and plenty of fast-paced, knuckle-biting action." Booklist

"Those seeking an outstanding British police procedural will devour the ninth entry in Rowson’s sea-oriented series. Rowson’s plotting is deftly layered, and she successfully captures the mood of her protagonist’s tortured journey while creating abundant tension for the main plot of political intrigue." Library Journal USA

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"Set against the stunning backdrop of the south coast, once again Portsmouth succumbs to the seedy criminal underworld of murder and intrigue. This is the best book in the series to date, and can not only stand alone as a great read, but is a must for those readers following Andy Horton in his quest for answers to his hidden past. Fast paced from beginning to end and totally gripping, Pauline Rowson can always be relied upon to give us a great story.Horton is a modern day 'Bergerac' and should definitely be on TV. I can't wait for the next instalment."
